Colin Kaepernick

Political activist, former NFL quarterback, and sports speaker for hire Colin Kaepernick is notorious for starting the “Take a Knee” movement. Kaepernick  began his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers and quickly gained notoriety as a star player. Aware of his power as a public figure, Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem in 2016 and began an equal rights movement far bigger and more controversial than he ever anticipated.

First capturing the attention of the nation, Colin Kaepernick has grown into a global phenom. Receiving Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience Award in April 2018, he gave a moving speech in Amsterdam. Kaepernick graciously thanks all of his supporters for continuing to challenge social norms that deprive minorities of basic human rights. In Kaepernick’s two-minute Nike commercial released this year, he tells his fans to stand strong in their beliefs. While playing in the NFL, Colin Kaepernick led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012.  In 2013 he helped them reach the NFC Championship, becoming and even more highly valued player. It wasn’t until 2016 that Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem at a preseason game. Continuing throughout the season and drawing the attention of media outlets, this is when Kaepernick became a household name. Donald Trump is particularly critical of Kaepernick’s method of protest. Threatening to fire all NFL players that support the “Take a Knee” movement, Trump’s protest has only helped the movement grow further. Not being signed in 2017 despite his impressive record on the field, Kaepernick has filed a grievance with the NFL. Many believe they are refusing him due to his personal beliefs and wish to see him back on the field.

Now cutting ties with the NFL completely, Kaepernick is a full time political activist. Following Kaepernick’s lead, Nike also cut ties with NFL and stars Colin in their 2018 ad campaign. The campaign garners support from many influential celebrities and athletes, including Serena Williams and LeBron James. Potentially making a return to football, Kaepernick is under consideration to be a quarter back in the new XFL. He is also reported to have signed a $1,000,000 book deal with Random House earlier this year.
