The new company helped people log online and it also pioneered social media by focusing on chat rooms, instant messages and forums. The $164 billion acquisition was completed in January 2000 but quickly ran into trouble as part of the dot-com recession, compounded by accounting scandals. Case announced his resignation as chairman in January 2003, although he remained on the company’s board of directors for almost three more years.
After his resignation at AOL, Case still remained active in the business world investing in Living Social and Zipcar. According to Forbes, Case is worth an estimated $1.3 billion making him the 341st richest person in America. Steve Case donates his fortune to a variety of causes including education and healthcare.
