Celebrity Speaker Rita Wilson is a respected producer, celebrated actress, dedicated philanthropist and accomplished writer who has worked as a contributed editor for Harper’s Bazaar and the Huffington Post. Rita has worn many hats in the entertainment industry and is also one of our favorite Celebrity Moms. Even through all of her success, Rita has stayed humble and credits her immigrant parents for giving her an incredible work ethic and for keeping her grounded.
Celebrity Speaker Rita Wilson landed her first role on The Brady Bunch as Pat Conway when she was just 16 years old. After appearing on The Brady Bunch, Rita starred in over 30 TV shows over the next 20 years including Bosom Buddies where she met her husband Tom Hanks. In 1993 she landed a break-out role in the instant classic major film Sleepless in Seattle. In 2002, Celebrity Speaker Rita Wilson produced the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, drawing on her own experiences she had growing up in a Greek Orthodox family. The movie became the highest-grossing independent film of all time and is still the professional achievement that she is most proud of.
In recent years Rita Wilson has taken to Broadway and appeared in major productions such as Chicago and Fish in the Dark. During her career she has partnered with several organizations including UNICEF and the Moffitt Cancer Center. She is also a major supporter of the program “Willpower to Youth” which provides high school kids with acting classes among other programs to keep them out of gangs and off the streets.
In 2015, Rita faced her toughest battle yet as she revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She elected to have a bilateral mastectomy in order to fight the cancer and prevent it from coming back. Rita could have chosen to keep her personal life to herself, but she bravely came forward to discuss her diagnosis with the world in the hopes that she could inspire other women to get mammograms and second opinions when checking for life threatening illnesses like breast cancer. Rita is expected to make a full recovery and she is determined to not let cancer keep her down.
