Nathan Myhrvold

Chief Executive Officer and founder of Intellectual Ventures, Dr. Nathan Myhrvold was the first chief technology officer at Microsoft. He has been listed as co-inventor on 17 Microsoft patents. In 1999, after a lifelong interest in cooking and food science, he left Microsoft to pursue his cooking interests.

In 1991, celebrity chef speaker Nathan Myhrvold was a member of a team who won first place at the World Championships of Barbecue, with a first place prize in the special pasta category for a recipe that was developed by Nathan the day of the contest! For two years, Nathan worked as a stagier at the top French restaurant in Seattle called Rover’s. Under Chef Anne Willan from the Ecole De La Varenne, he completed his culinary training. Nathan is the principal author of a culinary text entitled, Modernist Cuisine, which released in March 2011, on the application of scientific research principles and new techniques and technology to cooking. He was selected as the keynote speaker for the UCLA College commencement ceremonies on Friday, June 12, 2015.

In addition to his business and scientific interests, he is a chef, earning his culinary diploma from École de Cuisine La Varenne in France. Nathan Myhrvold’s early culinary training was as an observer and unpaid apprentice at Rover’s, one of  Seattle’s leading restaurants, with Chef Thierry Rautureau.
