Born into a family of stage actors, Kate Winslet is among several generations of actors, it didn’t take long before Kate made her way into the limelight herself. By age 11, Kate landed her first gig dancing opposite the Honey Monster in a commercial for kids’ cereal.
Kate began to take her acting much more seriously when she enrolled in a performing arts school for high school. By age 17, she had her first major break after being casted as an obsessive adolescent in the film Heavenly Creatures in 1994.
Yet, it wasn’t until 1997 that Winslet became an international star. Taking on the role as Rose DeWitt Bukater in James Cameron’s Titanic, Winslet’s breathtaking performance resulted in a “Best Actress” nomination. She soon became the youngest recipient ever of two Academy Award nominations.
However, following the hype that surrounded her after her role in the Titanic, Winslet wished to steer clear of these types of films and focus more on independent films and acting.
Kate Winslet has continued to draw in positive comments from film critics on screen and has been nominated for, and won, countless awards. Her most recent award was received during the 2012 SAG awards when she won for “Best Female Actress” in a television movie or miniseries for her role in “Mildred Pierce.” Her most notable films of late include her work on the Divergent Series. She is also slated to appear in the Steve Jobs biopic alongside actor Michael Fassbender.
Nevertheless, her personality off-screen is one that is hard to not love as well. She is known for her mischievous pranks and her strong devotion towards her friends and family. Winslet ended up marrying assistant director Jim Threapleton in 1998, with whom she had her first daughter with, Mia Honey Threapleton, in October of 2000. Winslet and Threapleton divorced in 2001, but she remarried to director Sam Mendes in 2003. Mendes and Winslet gave birth to a son, Joe Alfie Winslet-Mendes later that year. However, after seven happy years of marriage, Winslet announced that the couple amicably separated in February of 2010.
Kate Winslet is an actress that seems to always win the hearts of her viewers in each role she plays. New York Magazine once quoted that she was “the best English-speaking film actress of her generation.”
