He is best recognized for his career body of work with General Electric (GE), helping to make the company one of the most successful and lucrative companies in the world bar none. He starting out as a junior chemical engineer in 1960 before working his way up to Vice President of GE’s plastics division by 1972. As the years passed, Jack added other titles to his job description including being named Vice President of GE’s metallurgical and chemical divisions. In 1973, he was named the organization’s head of strategic planning and began to make connections with top executives that would help him later as CEO of the company.
In 1979, Business Speaker Jack Welch was appointed Vice Chairman of GE. He succeeded Reginald H. Jones to become GE’s youngest chairman and CEO in 1981, a position he served in until his retirement in 2001. Jack’s management style hinged on simplification and consolidation. He adopted Motorola’s Six Sigma quality program in 1995 and the year before he became CEO, GE recorded revenues of roughly $26.8 billion and the year before he left, revenues increased to nearly $130 billion. By 2004, GE was the most valuable and largest company in the world. Jack Welch was named ‘Manager of the Century’ by Fortune magazine.
