With his inspirational story of dropping out of high school at age 17 to becoming a household known chef, Bobby started his cooking career from the ground up with his first job as a cook at Joe Allen’s. Bobby showed so much promise that his boss decided to pay for Bobby’s tuition to study at The French Culinary Institute, where he was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Award. While working in NYC at many different restaurants, he developed a new style of American Southwest food by using avocados and beans. By using these ingredients he opened his first restaurant Mesa Grill in New York. His next restaurant, Bolo Restaurant and Bar opened in November of 1993 in the Flatiron district. Also in the same year, Bobby was named the James Beard Foundation’s Rising Star Chef, which honored him as the most accomplished chef under the age of 30. The New York Times also awarded Bolo an unheard-of three stars.
In Las Vegas, Celebrity Chef Speaker Bobby Flay opened a second Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace in 2004. The next year, Bar Americain opened as an American cuisine restaurant. His first steakhouse was opened in 2006, the Bobby Flay Steak, was opened in Atlantic City. Bobby opened his sixth restaurant, Mesa Grill Bahamas, at The Cove Atlantis. In 2009, his second Bar Americain opened at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT. Bobby opened his fifth Bolo Restaurant and Bar on the University of Pennsylvania campus in 2010. Since then he has also opened Bobby’s Burger Palace, which has 11 different locations spanning from Washington to Virginia. He further has opened a mediterannean restaurant Gato, and most recently has opened up his newest restaurant in Las Vegas called Shark.
Bobby Flay has also cooked on the Oprah show back in 2009 and did one of his lunchtime favorites, Waldorf salad wrap. This recipe, which boasts rotisserie chicken, blue cheese and pecans, is a wrapped-up twist on an old school salad. Bobby is currently starring in the Food Network show, Beat Bobby Flay, where two chefs go head-to-head for the chance to Beat Bobby Flay that premiered in 2014. Since then, it has become must-see-television for cooking fans, and has continued to gain popularity over the past couple of years. In addition to this, Flay has hosted 16 different cooking shows and specials on Food Network and the Cooking Channel. His popular shows led to Flay being the first chef to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Bobby is also very interested in horse racing, and owns multiple horses in addition to being on the Breeders’ Cup board of directors. One of his most successful horses is named Super Espresso, who just won its fourth race and $100,000 at the Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes at Pimlico. Another successful horse owned by Bobby is named More Than Real, which won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2010. In addition to owning horses, Bobby Flay owns a long-haired Maine Coon kitten named Nacho, who travels with Bobby and is one of his best friends. Nacho also has Instagram fame as well, with his account having 218K followers.
In May of 2011 Bobby partnered with OpenSky. OpenSky is a social shopping platform that helps customers discover and buy great products that fulfill interests in Food, Style & Beauty, Healthy Living, and Home & Design. He endorsed Unilever Best Foods/Hellman’s Mayonnaise and Baskin-Robbins. Bobby has a line of cookware, grill accessories, dinnerware, serveware and drinkware. He is available for speaking engagements, personal appearances, and product promotion.
Bobby in the past has used his influence as well to make cooking interesting and exciting for the younger generation, and is a big advocate at letting kids follow this passion early in life. One such petition he supported was asking Hasbro to make the Easy-Bake oven more gender neutral so that younger boys wouldn’t dismiss the idea of cooking.
Flay’s story of high school dropout to a household name in the cooking world exhibits the idea that anyone can be successful in following their true passion. With his charismatic and laid-back demeanor, he’s someone who’s easy to relate to in addition to being incredibly motivational through his life-stories and all that he has accomplished.
