    Lindsey Vonn, an American alpine ski racer has won three consecutive overall World Cup and downhill championships, and she was the first American woman and third woman ever to achieve this accomplishment. Another first for Lindsey as an American woman was winning the gold medal in downhill at the 2010 Winter Olympics, won three consecutive World Cup season titles in Super G, and two repeated titles in the combined.

    Lindsey also has forty-one World Cup wins in the downhill, Super G, slalom and super combined, as of March 2011. Winning her Olympic gold and bronze medals, two World Championship gold medals in 2009, and three overall World Cup titles, Lindsey has become the most successful American skier in ski racing history.

    She is the recipient of the Laureus World Sports Awards Sportswoman of the Year for 2010 and again was named the USOC’s sportswoman of the year for 2010. She finally made her World Cup debut on November 18, 2000 in Park City, Utah at the age of sixteen.She made her Olympic debut at the 2002 Winter Olympics when she was seventeen, racing in the slalom and combined with her best placing in the combined with sixth place. In Puy Saint Vincent, France, she received a silver medal in the downhill at the Junior World Championship. Next, came the U.S. Alpine Championships in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where she was the silver medalist in the downhill. Then, she captured her first World Cup podiums in December 2004 for the downhill victory at Lake Louise, Aberta and five more World Cup podiums over the next two months. In her first World Championship in Bormio, Italy, she came in fourth place in both the downhill and the combined. Lindsey came in ninth in the Super G, but was not able to finish the giant slalom.

    Her second Winter Olympic appearance was in 2006, Lindsey crashed in the final training run for the downhill race. She was rushed by helicopter to Turin and was hospitalized overnight. Picking herself up, she returned the next day to compete and finished eighth. For showing much determination, she was awarded the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award. Lindsey Vonn won silver in both the downhill and Super G at the World Championships in Are, Sweden. Crashing in a training session before the slalom caused a low-level ACL sprain to her right knee, ending her season four weeks early yet she finished third for the season in the woman’s World Cup in the downhill and Super G.

    Her 2008 season was shaping up to be a good year, she won the overall World Cup title and became the only second American woman to do so, following Tamara McKinney. Along with Bode Miller, the two were the first Americans to sweep the men’s and women’s overall titles in 25 years. Lindsey went on to win the World Cup season title in the downhill and U.S. Alpine Championships in both the downhill and slalom. She also established a new all-time record for most World Cup downhill victories by and American with ten wins. In 2009, Lindsey Vonn repeated as overall World Cup champion, repeating as champion in the downhill, and winning the season championship in Super G. At the 2011 ESPY awards, she was awarded Best Female Athlete.

    Having notable seasons in 2008 and 2009, she skyrocketed herself into becoming the most winning American female skier of all time, and in 2010 she proved to be the best American on skis.
